Pay-as-you-go solar pioneer Azuri Technologies will join the World Bank and energy sectors leaders in Nairobi, Kenya this week at an event focussed on speeding up universal energy access.

The Kenya Ministry of Energy and World Bank are hosting a National Electrification Conference under the theme Achieving Universal Access to Electricity by 2022.

Azuri East Africa General Manager Snehar Shah will be speaking to the delegation on Friday on the ‘challenges and opportunities in off-grid energy service delivery’.

“If you want to boost the economy and encourage development, then the focus needs to be on reliable, affordable energy. You only have to look at the impact of pay-as-you-go solar sector in boosting local economies, linking people to the formal economy and financial services and creating thousands of employment opportunities across rural Kenya.” said Snehar Shah.

New recent report GOGLA, the global association for the off-grid solar energy industry, shows 58% of households with off-grid solar systems undertake more work and enterprise thanks to clean, affordable, electricity.

Azuri has been a leading provider of pay-as-you-go-solar home solutions in Kenya since 2012 and has created 5,000 new jobs across sub-Saharan Africa through is distribution partnerships and agent network.

Azuri will also be showcasing its newly launched electronic voucher system in conjunction with consumer goods giant Unilever and leading communication provider Safaricom, where Azuri-Sunlight customers who top-up for light on a weekly basis can redeem a free e-voucher for Sunlight washing powder at Unilever kiosks.

The conference will be attended by senior government officials, power utilities leaders, international development partners and investors in the energy sector who will share successes and challenges in delivering affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy to off-grid populations in Africa.
