Simon Bransfield-Garth, CEO of Azuri Technologies, a pioneering pay-as-you-go solar company based in Cambridge, has been named CleanTech Founder of the Year at the first annual BMWi UK Tech Founder Awards held in London.

The Awards celebrate and champion the entrepreneurial spirit of those who create, disrupt and innovate within the UK’s rapidly changing tech landscape.

The CleanTech Founder of The Year is awarded to the entrepreneur whose technology significantly improves sustainability and lowers carbon emissions.

“It is a great honour to receive the award and have the spotlight on the Azuri’s continued success in delivering affordable, clean energy to off-grid households across Africa,” said Simon Bransfield-Garth.

Since 2012, Azuri has been using its pioneering pay-as-you-go solar technology to deliver affordable, clean energy to households in Africa who have no access to power.

Over 600 million people in Africa have no access to electricity and many such households located in regions where the provision of grid electricity is prohibitively expensive. Azuri customers are able to pay weekly instalments via their mobile phone at a cost that is approximately the same as the customer savings from replacing kerosene and candles for lighting and external phone charging costs. Once their system is fully paid for, all energy generated is free of charge.

Awards founder Francesca James said “Behind every great tech business is a great entrepreneur, and behind them is an inspiring story. These are the people who create, disrupt and innovate. That’s what we’re looking to celebrate and champion with the BMWi UK Tech Founder Awards”.
